Bayt (pron: bahyeet) is one of the paintings in my Excavation series. Bayt is an Arabic word for house, or home.

Each of the pieces in the Excavation series began as an unfinished painting from earlier, process-oriented sessions in the studio. The excavation of these many layers of paint came as I grieved the overwhelming losses suffered in Gaza. Grieving is a very physical act, at least for me. To be able to scrape and scratch helped me to feel deeply the sorrow I had been carrying.

Despite the destructive process, I found beauty in the longing I carry for a future, healed world.
